Saul J. Karpen is the chief scientific officer of the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. He is a professor of internal medicine, adjunct professor of pediatric medicine, and holds the Phillip B. Hylemon Endowed Chair of Medicine and Microbiology. He also serves as a pediatric hepatologist at VCU Children’s Hospital of Richmond.
His research focuses on the causes and mechanisms of cholestasis, including genetic contributors to biliary atresia. He aims to improve clinical care, advance research, and develop new therapies for infants and children with liver disease, ensuring continuity of care into adulthood.
Dr. Karpen is actively involved in the NIDDK-supported ChiLDReN and NASH CRN liver disease consortia. He is currently the Senior Councilor of AASLD and will serve as President in 2026.
